Back To The Future

Do you know the history of our Christian faith? In chapter seven of Acts today we read about Stephen and how he gave a historical speech on the history of Christianity starting with God calling Abraham and telling him to go to the land of promise. From there Stephen gives the priests a crash-course in the major events that led to the crucifixion of Jesus at the hands of the very people Stephen is talking with at that moment. This truthful statement causes them to become furious and they stone Stephen to death.

Today's reading, coupled with a new leadership book I am reading about the life and times of Bo Schembechler, caused me to think ahead to our CSF history....go back to the future. Meaning, what will people be saying about CSF 35, 50 or 100 years from now?

Of course, we don't have a DeLorean time-machine to give us the exact details, but we do have a God given vision that is clear. Here are some things I believe will be a part of our historical future.

We will have a large campus here on the corner of Steven's Mill and Mt. Harmony Rd (with the 74 by-pass close by) that facilitates daily and weekly ministries. A campus that will have a designated building for Care Ministries like divorce care, addiction recovery, single parent help center, crisis pregnancy and adoption services to name a few.

We will have a state of the art gym and ball fields that will be open to the public and host city & public school leagues and the like. It will enable kids, teenagers and adults a place to recreate, have fun and impact their friends for Christ.

Our current building will one day be the place that is designated for our Middle and High School ministries to flourish as we open it up daily for Students to come and hangout, enjoy a video game area, do their homework and enjoy a coffee bar just for students. A great and safe place to be a teenager in our growing suburban area. Our current auditorium will be ideal for students to come experience their own services with a live band and technological arts all run by the students. A place where we can train and develop teenagers in music, video and other aspects of the arts.

We will have creatively designed areas for kids to play and learn on Sundays and other specified times during the week.

We will have a....this entry is getting too long! Tune in tomorrow for the rest of the ride into our future!

Dirty Toilets

Who is greater at CSF... the person who sings a solo on Sunday or the person who comes in on Tuesday to clean the bathrooms? Who is more needed at CSF...the person who teaches a group of kids on Sunday morning or the three volunteers that came in yesterday for 2 hours and entered in all the new data into our computers so that we can have updated info on everyone who calls CSF home.

Answer: Neither is greater than the other or more needed, they all are doing something with the time and gifts they have. At CSF we have a philosophy of ministry that is different than many churches like ours. We believe that everyone who calls this place home should be able to enjoy the true joy and blessing of being a Player on the Team. Everyone has different gifts, passions and time to be involved in some specific way that will make our Fellowship as great as God wants.

At CSF we don't pay nursery workers to watch our kids during the service, we don't have to pay musicians to play in our band and we don't hire a company to come in and clean our toilets because we are to "good" to do it.

Nope....we have a highly skilled and incredible band full of volunteers! We have squeaky clean bathrooms every Sunday morning because we have volunteers who truly believe that they are making a difference when they show up at 7am on Sunday to clean the bathrooms before you and I show up! It is called having "ownership" in the Purpose and Game Plan of CSF. It is called being a part of an incredible Team that is changing our city!

Acts chapter six is a perfect example of our philosophy of ministry. As the first church was growing, they were starting to have more and more needs "pop" up in their group. So, the disciples choose some folks to help shoulder the load. These people were not going to be teachers or directional leaders, they were going to help the widows and also help with food distribution to the poor.

The New Testament is clear. Fellowship only works well when everyone gets involved and serves. Of course, it is easier to just pay people to do all the dirty and hard work. It is easier to go find some "hired-gun" musicians and have them show up and play and sing on Sunday....but that is not the picture of the Acts church we are reading about. It is not what CSF is about either. The role of our staff is to cast and implement vision and build volunteer teams that are trained for ministry.

While reading through Acts have you felt like maybe you are on the bench looking at others making an impact? If so, maybe it is because you are not in the game playing. We have doubled in size since moving into our building. We have many new Team Players getting involved.....are you?

If not and you want to start...contact a staff member that oversees the area you are interested in.

Two Things We Must Do

I love the fact that hundreds of people at CSF are reading their Bible daily and using their journal. It is great to know that we are all reading and learning the same thing on the same day.

Today's reading in Acts chapter five highlights two difficult but very important aspects of the Christian life. These two things are a must in a person's life if they are to live a discipled life. A life that is fully-devoted to Christ in all aspects of their life.......what we call being a Player! Moreover, it is two aspects that directly affect the vision, purpose and game plan of each local church.

In verses 1-11 we read about a married couple who make a financial commitment to God via the church. However, when the land is sold, they decide not to give what they committed to give. They showed a non-trusting and selfish attitude. An attitude that the Bible says comes directly from Satan. Every Christian knows that the local church and its ability to practically function, meet needs, minister to every age person and reach the lost hinges on the financial giving of the people in that Fellowship.

Every Christ follower should see themselves as Stewards of all they have. A Steward is willing to give it all if God were to ask....however, the only all inclusive command that every Christian has is to tithe back to God 10% of what God has given them. It shows trust in God to meet your needs and it shows a humble non-selfish attitude toward our "stuff". The Bible says, "what do you have that did not come from God?" If we are to live a financially stress free life, we have to see ourselves as stewards and not owners. If CSF and every other church is to really flourish and be all God has asked them to be...each Christian that calls that church home, must be stewards and tithe.

Verses 17-42 show the resolve of the disciples. They were thrown in jail and beaten for sharing the good news of salvation through Jesus. They were told if they kept telling people about Jesus that they would be thrown back into jail and eventually killed. So......what to do?

They kept Sharing the good news of Jesus so that all could hear and have the ability to accept. You and I have the obligation (privilege) to share with our family and friends about Jesus. We can do it and no one will beat us up or throw us in jail. In many cases we must do it, or people will not hear. The best way for a person to accept Christ at CSF over the years has been when they have been personally invited by a Christian. It really is that simple.

I told you reading your Bible and actually doing what it says...would change your life. The key is will you be "doers" of the God's truth or just people who hear it and do what you want? Having the best spiritual year of your life is up to you!

Over Flow Sunday

Wow! Yesterday was a huge day at CSF. During the 10:30 service we had to bring in more chairs and seat people up in the balcony. Of course, the balcony does not have chairs yet... so those fine people sat on the carpet. Our parking team did a great job of parking people in every corner available and across the street at the warehouse.

Of course, this is great news! However, I need to ask many of our CSF regular attendees to please help us reach out to more people who come as our guests, by attending our 9am or noon service. The 9am service has the exact same kids and student ministries as the 10:30, and childcare from new born to kindergarten is provided at the noon service.

Our attendance was great yesterday! However, most importantly, is the fact that so many people are admitting that they have some challenges in their marriage and that this hard hitting series is proving very helpful. I've received feedback from so many people that they are glad to hear that what they are experiencing in their marriage is relatively normal for all marriages and that there is hope.

The hope comes from the grace, strength and wisdom of Jesus Christ. The hope comes from being involved in a life-changing Fellowship like CSF where you can be in positive relationships with people who are committed to the same values. At CSF you can be in a Home Team that encourages you to be the best you can be. At CSF you can attend our Sacred Marriage seminars next month. At CSF you find a place that is dedicated and committed to being a part of your entire life. We truly want to be a church that you can revolve your life around and "do life together" with people that love you and want what is best for you.

This type of complete life-change and what we call "Fellowship" does not happen once a week on Sunday. At CSF we are committed to creating environments here on our campus and in our city that minister to every person throughout the week. Here on our campus we want to provide a place that toddlers, kids, students, singles, men, women and couples can come and be apart of opportunities that will strengthen every arena of their life.

In 2008 we are looking to expand our ministries that we provide for the people of CSF. I love the fact that almost everyday their is life-changing opportunities going on here.

Today's reading is Acts chapter 4. The first four chapters of Acts detail exactly what we are about as a Fellowship. "Doing Life Together!"

Verse 13 stood out to me because it reminds us that we can all make a HUGE difference in our world and the only requirement....is that we have spent time with Jesus!

CSF Lead Team

This morning we started reading in the book of Acts. If you have never read the book of Acts all the way through, you are in for a treat. In today's reading we see the Biblical importance of church leadership. Judas has killed himself and so the disciples are led by God via the Old Testament scriptures to select another person for leadership. As the first fellowship grows in size through the book of Acts, we will read about them adding more leaders and giving out specific roles and responsibilities.

Like any company, sport team or military.....a local Fellowship rises and falls on leadership. At CSF we are a staff led Fellowship and are governed by what we call our Lead Team. The Lead Team gives spiritual direction and protection for our Fellowship, while the staff handles daily operations. As a matter of fact, tomorrow morning at 7am I will meet with our CSF Lead Team. We meet once a month to discuss the purpose, game plan, direction, passion, challenges and other issues of our Fellowship. This group is non-paid, but they are faithful leaders at CSF who have taken on the responsibility of giving overall accountability and guidance to me and CSF. They give approval of the budget each year and give wisdom and approval to large expenditures....like when we purchase land, add buildings and the like.

While reading this chapter of Acts, I thought it would be good to remind you of who is on our Lead Team. Our active Lead Team members are Mark Little, Andrew Montognese, Greg Crosby and myself. Our inactive members (meaning they are taking some time off and may come back later) are Bill Branigan and Neal McGlohon. This team spends countless hours in serving our Fellowship to make sure we are staying focused on our God given purpose and game plan.

This Sunday we will continue our series on "How To Kill Your Marriage." This week we will be talking about how to stop living in the Torture Chamber that some of us call home. If you have ever felt like you married the wrong person, can't get along with your spouse, or just wish they would change....this Sunday is for you. Moreover, many of us have friends who would benefit from this message and they need us to invite them!

See you Sunday!

PS Does anyone know what that big X banner hanging in the atrium on Sunday morning?

Abstinence On American Idol

I am embarrassed to admit that I actually watch American Idol. Their is something evil in me that loves watching people make fools of themselves on T.V. I roll laughing when these people actually think they can sing and they are horrible. Some of the people on there are faking and they know they stink and just want to get on T.V. ...those people are not funny.

Last night Idol was in South Carolina. Always a treat to see the locals there come out! However, one high school girl did have a good voice and she made an impression with her stance on "sex before marriage." She was the head of a club at her school that promotes and teaches her peers the physical and relational dangers of premarital sex.

When she mentioned this to the Simon, Paula and Randy.....they started laughing and making fun of her stance. Simon even asked her to give her speech to him. After she was done, they were still jeering with her amongst themselves and as she left, Simon says under his breath to the other two. "One week in L.A. and she will change her stance on that!" This is the sex saturated world we live in and if you have kids you know that you cannot protect them from being bombed with the images, ideas and pressures to indulge sexually before marriage.

We cannot keep the influence completely away, but we can prepare them to stand up for what is right, pure and best for them. Our CSF Student ministry is having our second annual "Not In Our House Weekend!" This is a great weekend experience for middle and high school kids to learn how to stand up to the sexual pressures they have every day and how to deal with the temptations they face. This two night and two day experience was a huge hit last year and all 102 kids loved it! They came away knowing what is best for them and how they can honor God with their bodies. Our leaders do a great job making it age appropriate for each student and most of the time the learning happens in small groups with kids their age.

If you have a middle or high school student then you should make sure they are a part of this life-changing weekend. Their is NOTHING better for your son or daughter to be doing that weekend. Contact our Student Ministry offices for more details. The weekend is February 15-17 and is only $35! We make sure this weekend is affordable for all....so that all can come and enjoy it!

Daily Bible Reading: Wow we finished the book of Luke! I hope that the power of the resurrection story inspires you to know that their is NOTHING you cannot do with the power of Christ living in you!

Who Do YOU Listen To?

(Quick typo to clear up...Easter Egg Hunt is in March not April)

Do you have dreams for 2008? Do you have some lofty dreams and goals for your life, career and family? I hope and pray that you do.

I know I have BIG dreams for my family! I have HUGE dreams for CSF and the people who make up this life-changing and dynamic Fellowship. I hope you too personally see yourself playing a major part in the BIG dream that is CSF.

When it comes to moving toward your personal dreams and goals, what steps are you taking to make them reality? Every dream has to have a plan, process and path that you engage in fully to see it happen. Do you know what these are in your life's dreams?

Over the last year or so I have re-learned a principle that I have begun to once again implement into my life and ministry here at CSF. The principle is this: Your dreams are yours and you will only be able to move on the motor that is fueled by
your passion and love for that dream. If you don't love what you are doing and the path you are heading in, then you will not make it when things get rough.....as all dreams will have their challenges. Moreover, you have to be who God has called you to be and not try to be or accomplish what you think others want you to be and do.

We all know people who chased money and power but lost their passionate dream along the way. They may have money, power and other things that people told them was a worthy cause to chase after....but they find them selves hating what they are doing and dreading tomorrow.

I know this for a fact. When you decide to move forward in trying to reach your goal and dreams that God has given you....people from all around will give you their opinion and try to persuade you in many different directions.

We have to learn to listen first to God and then the voice in our soul that tells us what is the right thing to do. Not the easiest. Not the safest. Not the most popular. Many times the decisions to be made are not morally right or wrong...they are just different.

Who should we listen to then? As Christ followers we listen to God, seek wise counsel and then move in the direction of our heart's cry and passion for what we have been asked to do by God and the dream in our soul that won't fade.

In today's Bible reading we read about the Crucifixion of Jesus. Jesus knew his ultimate Passion was lost people. He knew his Path was up the "Skull". He knew God's Plan was for Him to be the Savior of the world. So he moved forward.....

We also read in verse 23 & 24 Pilate went against what he knew to be the right thing to do and listened to the CROWD. He went with the popular decision and not what he knew in his heart was the right thing to do. He polled the people and went completely against what he was paid to do...govern correctly.

When it comes to your dreams and goals.....who do you listen to????

Wii vs Scrable

On Sunday I told you about our family game night that we tried to have while it was snowing outside. Saturday night my wife picked Scrabble for us to play. I cannot think of a more boring game than trying to "out-spell" the other person. I felt like I was back in 4th grade having a Spelling Bee.

Last night we played our new Wii. (Editors note: We had to sell our new Christmas
dog, Tebow....my wife's allergies flared up and he had to go....sad day in the Hibbard house. We made it up by buying our son a new Wii) Now that is a game night for high energy people with attention problems. We swung bats and rackets, pitched, bowled and shot pool on in the comforts of our living room. That is an ingenious game for families like the Hibbards.

However, this morning my shoulder is soar and I have rug burn on my toe. I often thought about it last night...how crazy do families now look to people who may see them through their window as they jump and swing while looking at a T.V. Most people would say that they don't care how foolish they look...it is good family fun. I agree.

Yesterday, your CSF staff had a half-day 2008 planning meeting. We have planned some things that are going to give you, your family, your friends and our entire Fellowship opportunities to just have some fun! At CSF we are not just about getting you to attend on Sunday morning....we are a Fellowship interested in "doing life together." We have planned fun things over the next year to encourage singles and families to get out and have some fun. We want to encourage healthy fun activities for singles, moms, dads and kids. We are putting an emphasis on healthy relationships this year as we all grow together. Healthy and meaningful relationships does not happen when we just come on Sunday and view a service only to run back into seclusion for the rest of the week.

Mark these fun dates down now and plan now to get out, get involved, build some healthy friendships and have FUN!

April 22nd Huge Family Easter Egg Hunt. (And we mean HUNT...we have 20 acres of land filled with beautiful trees and rolling hills. Great place to find INCREDIBLE prizes in an egg.)

May 9th Ladies Night Out at CSF (A huge hit last year is back)

May 10th 80's Retro Dance (We will clear out the chairs, hang the dancing ball and let the DJ pump the music through our state or the art sound system. Clint has promised to start the night off with his famous "worm-dance.")

May 11th Special Mother's Day Service

June 13th Men's Texas Hold'em Tournament (Last year this was huge...this year will be bigger with even more prizes!)

June 15th Special Mother's Day Service

June 29 - July 2nd All-Stars Kid's Camp (New place and New Fun!)

July 14 - 18 CSF Student Ministry Camp (Same place and New Fun!)

July 27th Family Day Camp at Camp Eagle Rock. (We have the whole place reserved just for CSF family and friends. From 2pm - 9pm we will have use of the pools, ropes course, ball fields, sand volleyball court, climbing wall and much more!)

Daily Bible Reading: Luke 22

Jesus ask a great question in verse 27? Who is greater? The one sitting at the table or the person serving the table. Jesus said of himself, I am one who serves. You choose.......do you want to be a person who sits or be like Jesus?

That Is Why We NEVER Cancel

On Saturday at 4pm it looked like we would have snow and ice covered roads come Sunday morning. It was not looking good for the 9am or 10:30 service. I was thinking we would set a record for our noon service as people would have to wait until them.

Nope......The snow stopped at 9pm. The wind dried the roads and on Sunday the roads we completely snow and ice free. It was Amazing. The truly amazing thing was the number of local churches that were canceling all services for Sunday as early as 5pm on Saturday.

I have always believed that CSF people actually look forward to our Encounter Services and would not want to miss unless they just had to because of the weather conditions. So we never cancel............

As a reminder for the next time. Lets say that one Sunday morning the roads are too bad for safe travel. Don't forget that most days the roads are clear by 10am. So, just sit and relax and plan to attend the noon service.

One more reminder.....for all you weather weenies who did not come yesterday because you had it in your mind on Saturday that their would be 10 ft of snow on the roads, go ahead and listen on-line to yesterdays message and that will prepare you for next week in our How To Kill Your Marriage series.

Daily Bible reading: Luke 21

The verse that stood out to me was verses 1-4. The story of the poor widow who gave to the church only a few pennies. However, Jesus said because her gift was given out of an actual sacrifice that would cause her to have to rely on God in a faithful way for her needs......then her gift was more in God's eyes than the wealthy who plunked in a few big bills but that was nothing close to a sacrificial gift that may alter how they live.

It is my prayer that in 2008 we will have more and more CSF people make a commitment to be a faithful part of the mission of CSF by obeying God and giving a tithe of their income....even if that means they have to adjust their lifestyle a little.

CSF Snow Policy

The weather "experts" are calling for a very cold weekend with a high chance of snow, ice and winter mix. Looks like it will be a great weekend to play outside in the snow and then hang in the house with family and friends as we play games and watch movies.

Every year when this type of weather first roles through our fine city, people who are new to CSF begin to ask what the Sunday Snow Policy is for our services. We start getting calls and emails asking what TV station should they be looking to see the CSF announcement. Or by what time will the cancellation be on the web if we are canceling for the day. What is our bad weather Sunday policy.

Here is your answer........

WE NEVER CANCEL!

At CSF we never cancel a Sunday morning Encounter Service because of weather. It is to difficult to forecast. Moreover, one area of South Charlotte may get snow and ice and another does not.

The reason we have this policy is that we do not feel it is our place to tell you when it is safe for you to come out. We believe YOU can make your own best decision. When you wake up in the morning and look outside and you personally do not feel safe to drive....then stay home and have another cup of coffee! If you think it is fine for you and your family, then come on and enjoy the services. We feel as though our people really enjoy and want to be here on Sundays and are not looking for an easy excuse to "skip church."

This policy makes sense here in Charlotte:

**It saves the CSF staff from trying to play God on Saturday night at 5pm and guess what the weather will be like on Sunday morning. To many times churches have canceled only to wake up on Sunday to find the sun shining and the streets clear!

**It saves the CSF staff from scrambling around early Sunday morning trying to get our note out on the T.V. scroll.

**It saves you from having to watch the T.V. at 7am waiting to see if we have canceled.

**It saves you from feeling guilty when you choose to stay home because you don't feel safe but we never "Officially" canceled.

Our commitment is that our staff will personally call volunteer team leaders on Sunday morning to decide what needs to happen. If you are scheduled to serve that morning but you don't want to drive in the bad weather...then stay at home and don't worry about it!

We hope this simple policy helps!

Daily Bible Reading: Luke 18

I love the story of the two guys praying. Ever met someone who tells you how spiritual they are.....always telling you how great they are for God? Ever met someone who thinks God is lucky to have them on His team?

I believe that if my commitment to God is real, active and deep....people will know without me having to convince them how spiritual I am. Moreover, I truly believe that if a person is in tune with God and growing in their personal relationship with Him...then we will see fruit of what they say they believe.

I will see fruit in them being a fully-devoted follower of Christ. Or, what we call at CSF, being a PLAYER. We call it our six S's..(Salvation, Serving, Sharing, Stewardship, Spiritual Growth, Significant Relationships)

God is looking for humble Players who want to be a part of His team and accomplish great things together. Greater than we could ever do alone.

PS: In the NFL...they call this philosophy: The Patriot Way!

No School For CMS!

I love it when they forecast snow! I love it when it snows!

Last night as my 10 year old son was getting ready for bed he kept looking out the window to see if it was snowing. He was full of excitement as he thought about the possibility that school could be canceled. He kept saying things like:

"I hope it snows all night...and we don't have school!"

"I love it when we get to miss school and play in the snow!"

"Do you think they will actually cancel school?"

He went to bed with visions of no school dancing in his head. Of course, this morning when I got up and saw that the snow had covered our neighborhood...I knew his dream had come true. When he woke up, I told him "no school" and he cheered like he had just won a football game. When I left for the office he and our 2 1/2 year old were jumping on my bed playing. Soon they are planning to go out and play in God's new playground.

Do you remember the simple joys of snow falling when you were a kid? The simple pleasure knowing that their was no school and you could just play? I love seeing that in my kids. Just pure excitement over something simple. (Kelly and I are never one of those parents who complains when they cancel school. We think it is great that once in awhile they get to miss school and just play. After the kids are cold from playing outside, Kelly loves making hot chocolate with the kids and snuggling under a blanket and watching their favorite movies.)

Do you remember that kind of simple joy? Many of us as adults can parallel that fun giddy joy to when we first met our spouse. Or, as newlyweds we remember that simple joy that enveloped our hearts just knowing that when we got home we could just spend time with our new prince or princes.

Many of us now wonder where that went in our marriage. Our next Sunday series is going to take an honest look at why many marriages are dying and more importantly what we can do to stop ours from going down that destructive path.

Today's bible reading: Luke chapter 17

The verse that stood out for me is verse 3. Jesus says, if you have a friend who is a Christ follower and they are doing something against you that is wrong, you should confront them and encourage them stop. If they stop and repent....forgive them. If they sin against you seven times but then ask for forgiveness seven times....forgive them.

Have anyone in your life that you need to forgive? Maybe they don't even know they did something to hurt you...talk to them about it. My guess is that they will say they are sorry and ask for your forgiveness.

Thrive Starts Tonight

Our Winter semester of Thrive starts tonight! We have over 150 adults signed up for these classes that are designed to increase your ability to "Feed Yourself" and grow spiritually. Classes like:

* How to study the Bible
* Understanding other religions
* Connect 101
* How to have a Sacred and Successful Marriages
* Biblical wisdom on spending, budgeting, getting out of debt and saving our money.
* How to share your faith with your friends

Thrive classes start and end on different weeks because of the length of each class. However, it is exciting to know that from tonight and for the next 7 weeks....CSF will have adults who are doing what is necessary to grow in their Christian faith.

If you have not signed up for one of the classes, their is still time. Go to our website and read about each class and then register on-line.

What did you think about the Bible reading today? WOW....Luke 16 is a very clear chapter. Verses 10-15 caught my attention.

Jesus stated a principle that I have seen over and over in my life and the lives of other people. Those who are faithful with the little things in life are given more. Those who God can't trust with little things are never given more. This principle applies in many avenues in our lives. Money, power, responsibility, etc.

We use this principle with our kids, our boss uses it when giving promotions and God most certainly uses it when dealing with us. As you think about where you are and where you want to be for God in 2008, let this next verse ring in your soul.

Luke 16:15 "Jesus said to them, you are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your heart!"

Sports At CSF

A new year means plenty of sporting opportunities at CSF! This past Sunday we began the registration process for coaches and players in many different winter and spring sports. Paul and Tina Brannon are the point leaders for our growing Sports Ministry. They have done a great job discovering various city leagues we can be a part of this year. Here is a look at the teams and leagues that you can sign up for now!

Also, remember....each team needs a coach/manager that is responsible for the individual administration of each team through CSF and the league they are involved in. No coach....no team!

Here are the various teams:

Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Men's Softball competitive, Men's Softball recreational, Co-ed Softball, Co-ed Soccer, Indoor Volleyball and outdoor Sand Volley.

At CSF we normally choose to have our teams play in local city leagues. We believe that by doing this we can invite players who attend CSF to play and also those who do not attend CSF and not Christians to play on these teams. We believe that we can be a positive influence on those who are Christians and those who have yet to accept Christ....as they play on a team together. We love using sports to help reach people with the love of God! We also believe that sports is a great way to build our relationships at CSF!

This Sunday you can sign up in the info kiosk area as a coach or player on these various teams. Also, on February 10th at 12pm in the mini auditorium on the second floor Paul and Tina will lead a coaches meeting.

Expand Life Journal Update: I am so excited that we have sold 420 of our daily Bible reading and prayer Journals! That is awesome!

How are you doing in your Daily reading and prayer. Enjoying it? Remember, if you forget a day or two....keep going. As a matter of fact, don't worry about trying to catch up on the days you missed. Just read the passage for the day that you get back on track. Then, maybe on a ice day like they are calling for this Thursday...you can just read the parts you missed. The key is keep going!

This morning we read one of my favorite chapters in the Bible. I love the story Jesus tells about the lost son who leaves his father's estate and blows all his money on wine, women and wild living. We he arrives back...his dad accepts, forgives and allows him to join the family as a "son" and not a hired hand. What a picture of grace. Their are many times in my life that I am so glad God is just like that great dad in the story!

Have a great day!

Bill Board Going Up

Today on Hwy 74 and I-485, we will have a billboard going up to advertise our new message series coming up. The new series is called..."How to Kill Your Marriage." Of course, during the series we will be trying to give biblical wisdom and principles to help marriages. However, sometimes we can make things better by exposing what it is we are doing poorly first....then making the change.

Be sure to use the buzz that the billboard and newspaper coverage will create, along with our website to invite your friends and neighbors to this marriage saving series. People will sometimes wonder and ask why we would do such a creative and edgy title for a series and then also put it up on a billboard.

Guess what.....the daily Bible reading today answers that question perfectly. The first part of Luke chapter 14 gives in vivid color why we as a Fellowship do the creative marketing and series that we do. Jesus tells the parable about the great dinner table (it is an analogy of heaven and a personal relationship with Him) and how many of the "right kind of people" (picture of those who are church goers and Christians that know the truth but see no need to attend) were invited but they were busy. So the master tells the servant who is supposed to be getting people to attend this dinner banquet to go out and get the poor, the crippled, blind and lame (this is a picture of unchurched people who are not Christ followers and many times rejected by the local church) and invite them to come to the dinner. When the servant tells the Master that he has done this and yet there is still room for more at the dinner table, he tells him to go into the roads and city streets and find more needy people and "make them come in."

CSF using a billboard, newspaper and other creative means...is us putting our focus on those who live in our area that do not attend church anywhere else and probably don't have any Christian influence in their lives. As a Fellowship we are committed to reaching people who are not Christians and involved in a local church in our community.

Make plans to be here for this exciting new series!

Missions In 2008

On Wednesday night Rick gave us the great news about how we finished the year strong financially. He shared with us how YOU the people of CSF gave so faithfully as stewards who understand the principle of tithing and giving sacrificially. I am so glad that many of YOU believe in giving to something that is larger than any one person and is the agent of change in thousands of people's lives. As Rick said on Wednesday, the budget numbers are more than just boring numbers.....they represent lives that are being impacted for Christ. Great job CSF!

Rick also gave us the budget proposal for 2008. If you want to know more about the 2008 budget...you should have come Wednesday night! HA HA

No, seriously, the budget sheets are in the info kiosk area and you can pick one up this Sunday. I do want to highlight one thing that we are very pumped up about this year again. We have designated 10% of our budget giving to missional causes. We will give over a $100,000 to our mission causes again this year.

** Once again we will be a level five supporter of the church we help plant in Ethiopia. We give and fully support the pastors salary and insurance in the church . Because of how much the American dollar can purchase there, our monthly giving fully supports the ministry of this dynamic church. They have seen hundreds of former Muslims come to faith in Jesus Christ and are making an impact in the lives of many of the poor children there.

** Starting this year we are supporting our former youth pastor and his wife in their mission efforts in West Virgina. We are excited about what this new ministry will accomplish for the poor and needy in WVA and as they build teams to go to foreign countries.

** We give money directly to some local ministries here in Charlotte.

** We will be using this mission money to plant a new church fully funded by CSF. We have begun the prayer and seeking aspect of planting a new church that we will see launched in January 2009. That is the same month CSF turns 10 years old. We will celebrate our 10 year anniversary by launching a new Fellowship!

We truly believe that 2008 is the year we Expand in our faith, influence, missions and as a Fellowship as a whole.

Today's daily reading: Luke chapter 11!

Jesus gave us the reason why we should pray daily and how to have effective prayers! This coming Sunday we will conclude our CHEF series and I will use this passage to share with us all what you and I need to do to have an effective prayer life!

See you Sunday!

PS...If you must come to the 10:30 service, please park across the street or in the back. Last week we were completely out of parking and our guest were forced to park in the drop off area. That is a nice parking spot, but makes it hard for everyone to leave at the same time.

The Talk

Well..I finally felt like it was time. I had the BIG talk with my now 10 year-old son. With Viva Viagra and Cialis commercials on every 5 minutes during football games and Disney stars like Jamie Lynn Spears getting pregnant, I knew it was time to talk about where babies really come from.

So, this morning at our weekly Thursday breakfast before school I shared with him about where babies come from and what is the meaning of this word "Sex" that he hears so much. In a typical Peyton response, he listened, shrunk down a little in his seat and then said..."Okay, I wonder when the French Toast will be here."

I said, "do you have any questions?" He said, "Nope, I am good!"

It is sad that many of us have to take away our kid's innocence in this subject so early. I wish he could have gone a little longer just thinking that "mommies have babies and God puts them there." However, that is not our culture. Our kids are saturated with sexual talk and images on TV, the Internet and radio. Even if you did not have these things in your house, they hear it from their friends who do.

In thinking about my own kids and the hopes and dreams I have for them, I am so glad that CSF has a great kid's ministry. One that is fun, practical and teaches them the ways of the Bible. I am glad we have a safe place where a kid can be a kid while growing up in their spiritual faith in Christ. We have a kid's ministry that realizes that our kids are growing up in a different world than we did, and our leaders make sure that they communicate helpful principles about tough cultural subjects.

Our Middle School and High School ministry is the same way. Awesome for today's teenagers to learn and grow in a real and practical way. If you attend CSF and have kids of any age.....do yourself and your kids a favor and make sure they are here on a regular basis. Our Kids and Student Ministry is a godly and healthy counter balance to the crazy things they will see, learn and experience in our world.

Daily Bible Reading is Luke chapter 10.

What did you learn? Who did you dine with?

Today, you read about one of the most famous stories in all of the Bible. The good Samaritan story and its principles is well known. The verse that stood out to me was when Jesus was done telling the story, He said what He always says....."GO and do like-wise." Action...doing something about what you learn and what Jesus says. This is the case all throughout the Bible. We are never to learn just for learning sake. We learn so that we can do something about what we learn.

One way you can be like the Samaritan today is to look around you to the people in your life that are beaten up by the world and then invite them to the best possible place of resting and healing....invite them into Fellowship. Invite them to experience our Encounter Service, your Home Team or any other avenue that will introduce them to Jesus Christ.

It is coming this Spring!

Last night I met with 20 leaders from CSF. I laid out for them the information about an exciting adventure that we are all about to embark on. A specific vision for Spring of 08. I asked them to commit to it and serve as team leaders. I shared with them the role that I wanted them to play as leaders in this adventure. They all agreed to be a key part in what is coming.

They understood by the time we left that what we are about to do will be a positive and life-changing experience for them as individuals and for all of us who call CSF home. This adventure will forever change CSF in a meaningful way.

Over the next few weeks one of these CSF volunteer leaders may ask you to join them on their team. If you are asked......think about it, pray about it, do whatever...but say "yes" to being a part of this amazing team. You will be glad you did! CSF will be honored to have you.

It is coming this Spring and it will be awesome.......

Tonight is our Winter Fellowship Service....7pm!

Daily Bible Reading...This morning I ate with Jesus, Herod who beheaded John the Baptist, 5000 people who were hungry, Peter and the Disciples and another demon possessed boy that Jesus heals. That was a lot of people!

As I read this morning, God used a special set of verses in Luke 9 to encourage me and give me guidance. The set of verses that was meaningful directly for me today was Luke 9:57 - 62.

The key verse that was illuminated was Luke 9:62 where Jesus tells his followers that once we are heading out in faith....once we know what God has asked them to do....when we start moving in the direction God has given....don't look back, instead move forward. Even if things get hard, move forward in faith. Even if people make fun of you or don't go with you, move forward in faith.

Luke 9:62 Jesus Replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the Kingdom of God."

Primary Information

Our country is a buzz with all the Presidential Candidates giving their speeches about their Vision, Purpose, Values, their plan for the direction they want to take our country and their views on the issues. (Iraq, health care, illegal immigration, etc)

As Americans we should be reading, listening, watching and praying so that when it is our time to vote.....we make a well informed vote.

Tomorrow night you are invited to a CSF primary night. We call it our January Fellowship Service. Tomorrow night we will take time to:
* Have great worship as a Fellowship

* Rick, our new Executive Pastor, will give the yearly financial report of what happened in 2007 and what our budget is for 2008. He will share with you the exciting things we have seen happen in the last year and will also cast a financial vision for 2008. You will be reminded and inspired about things we have done and will do with our money. Things like how CSF fully supports a pastor, his family and really his entire church finances in Ethiopia. That we are supporting Kevin & Emily in WVA in 2008. That we give 10% of our budget giving to mission causes.

* I will share/update on the exciting progress we have made in achieving the vision goals we set out in August. You will hear first hand how CSF has contacted 8 public schools and received a heart felt welcome to begin having volunteers on campus, 5 days a week... every week of the school year. It is amazing what is happening in our Public School Impact ministry.

* I will share about our staffing structure change that has started in 2008. I believe this will greatly impact the quality and quanity of the ministry that you will experience at CSF.

* We will celebrate communion!

I believe that all CSF people should make plans to be at this amazing Fellowship Service! This will make sure that you are informed on the direction, plans, vision, values and the issues that we will be tackling in 2008. Of course, this CSF primary event does not have voting.....those of us that are here, vote with our lives as we agree with the Mission, Values, Purpose and Game Plan of this place called...CSF!

Daily Bible reading: Luke chapter 8 This morning I dined with: Jesus, His mom and brothers, the disciples who were scared, a wild man, A church leader and his dead daughter who was brought back to life.)

This morning I chose Luke 8:39 as the main scripture that stood out to me. The "wild-man" that had the demons cast out of him, wanted to hang-out with Jesus. Jesus told him it was better that he return home and "tell how much God has done for you."

WOW....Jesus could have said, "yeah..I saved you, you are a new person, why don't you just come hang around me. Maybe we can get some more Christians and just all hang out at the local coffee shop and talk about how blessed we are...."

Nope.....Jesus said, "take your changed life and go tell people what happened, because the best thing you can be doing is sharing about your changed life to those who still don't believe."

Hmmmmm after you spend some time with Jesus this morning, what do you think you should do?

First Day Of A Great 2008

WOW!

Yesterday we had almost 300 people buy our CSF Expand Life Journals! As you heard from the Chef yesterday, these Expand Life Journals are designed to help you have a vibrant and life-changing personal time with your Heavenly Father every day.

The Journals have a daily reading schedule that will allow you to read the Bible in one year. As a Fellowship we are challenging ourselves to read through the New Testament part of the daily reading.

The Journals have a place for you to read, then write out a few thoughts about what you read.

The Journals have a place for you to record a daily prayer request by a one word topic, then record the day that prayer gets answered.

This coming Sunday I will show you how to read a passage, record your observations, write down what you can learn and do and then pray about what you decided. This week we are all reading and doing the best we can....by next Monday, we will all be Expand Journal experts!

Today, January 7th, we read Luke chapter 7. (nothing like starting with one of the longest chapters in the New Testament...my ADHD was screaming..ha ha) When you read today, you invited these people to dine with you:

A Roman military leader, A widow whose son was raised from the dead, John The Baptist and his disciples, A woman who had lived an openly "sinful life" but we see her in the act of receiving grace and forgiveness because she "loved Jesus much" and received His free gift of salvation.

Not a bad way to start the day!

Here are the thoughts/principles that stood out to me personally as I read:

I want to have a "just say the word" kind of faith like the centurion had as I go through out my day!

I am thankful that Jesus really hurts when I hurt!

I am thankful that Jesus sees me like the "sinful woman" and offers me grace when I do stupid things.

Have a great day.....

PS..Thanks to all those who prayed and gave to our Year End Gift! In December we had our highest ever one month general budget giving AND we went over our goal of 57,000 for our Year End Gift. We brought in over 58,000 dollars over budget giving!

Great JOB CSF!

New Year Promises ??

Every year people make New Years Resolutions. Things they will stop doing, other things they will start doing and the list goes on. My experience, and some studies show that most of these "resolutions" last a few days...maybe a week or two. By February everything goes back to the way it was in the previous year.

This coming Sunday I am going to challenge you to make a "resolution", or what the Bible calls a promise or a vow that will change your life in 2008. I am going to challenge you to commit to spending relational time with God every day. Everyone can have their own times and style....but we all need to spend time with our Heavenly Father on a daily basis. The rewards of this time commitment are vast and are worth your time.

I will be straight with you...there are times when my personal times with God are not "thrilling and life changing" in that moment and on a daily basis. However, the daily reading, praying and time with God allows me to be ready for whatever comes my way. This is the time when God refreshes my soul, encourages me, convicts me of sin, shows me His way, reminds me of His grace, gives me wisdom and guides my steps.

Over the next two weeks you will be motivated, taught the "how to's" and challenged to grow in your personal relationship with Christ. It is not hard...but very beneficial. You can develop into your own best Spiritual Chef as you serve up for yourself a healthy and enjoyable time with God!

It is time that many of us learn to feed ourselves and stop needing me, some TV/Internet pastor to give you the spiritual food you need on a daily basis.

Remember, the Expand Life Journals will be on sale this Sunday. Cash...Check..or Credit accepted. Or, if you cannot afford it....we will give you one.

As for vows and promises made to God...

Numbers 30:2 "When a man makes vow to the Lord or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said."

James 5:12 "Above all, do not swear, not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your "yes" be "yes" and your "no" be "no" or you will condemned."

As you can see, the Lord takes our promises to Him very serious. If we take it as serious, we will give it our best and follow through.

PS...The rumor is true. My wife and I caved. After our hard stance on no animals in our house....We got our son a new puppy for Christmas! A Hypo-Allergenic small dog. Tebow joined the family on Wednesday!

Read Together...Grow Together

This Sunday we start a new series called: Chef..Living Beyond Fast Food Christianity!

This series is about each of us learning to pray, read our Bible and spend some time each day with our God. To grow healthy in our faith and in our personal relationship with Jesus Christ, we must learn to spend quality "feeding" ourselves spiritually.

Many people are tired, weak, uninspired and all around unhealthy when it comes to their spiritual and personal lives. A well balanced, daily and self-prepared spiritual meal is the "soul-ution" that you need.

You and I cannot survive on one meal a week. Coming to our Encounter Services on Sunday morning is like going to a nice restaurant. It is quality food and the best part is that someone else has worked hard to prepare it for you. However, only eating one meal a week that some-else has prepared for you is a great treat...but it will not sustain a healthy and vital life.

Moreover, even if you come to church every Sunday and go to Home Team every week.....that is not enough. If you and I are going to really grow healthy in our relationship with Christ in 2008...we each have to become our own personal Chefs.

Over the next two Sundays I am not only going to show you how...but we have designed a great "cook book" for each person. We are calling them our Expand Life Journals. These journals are easy to use daily Bible reading and prayer guides.

If you are ready to "Expand" your spiritual waistline, your faith, your knowledge, your influence and your overall life....then purchase one of these Journals this Sunday and make a commitment to use it. The best thing is that our staff has made a commitment to read along using the chart. So, every week we all know that we are reading the same passages in the Bible and are learning together.

I will explain more about this on Sunday. However, pass the word around. Expand Life Journals are here. We are charging our cost of $10 per journal. These are for all year long so that is well worth the price. However, if someone wants one and cannot afford it.....we will give you one! Having each person growing closer to God and becoming strong in their faith is more important than covering cost!

Will you commit to making 2008 the year YOU start to really take charge of your own personal spiritual journey? Together....we will all grow stronger and more healthy in 2008!

National Treasure & Golden Compass

Well....I missed my 10am deadline. I know, I know....not a great way to start the New Year! However, I am running on fumes this morning. Yesterday, New Years Day, Peyton and I got up at 7:30am in Dallas, TX and went to the Cotton Bowl. Bad game for the SEC but fun to experience. I have not been asleep since then. We left Dallas yesterday at 6:15pm EST and arrived here in Matthews at 9:05am EST. (I beat my going there time by 5 minutes!....) It took us 14 hours and 50 minutes to drive home. I took a shower and was in the CSF office at 9:45am! So......I missed my desired deadline of 10am...but still out by noon!

Since I am basically brain dead...I don't have much inspiration this morning. However, I will tell you my views about two movies I saw over the Christmas Holidays. I saw The Golden Compass and National Treasure. National Treasure was really enjoyable and the Golden Compass was boring with a scattered plot and stopped without ever ending.

I heard on the radio driving to Dallas that some Christian leaders were advocating that Christians not go see the Golden Compass because the book was written by a guy who was a known Christian antagonist and was an enemy of C.S. Lewis....or something. Someone asked me why I went to see such an EVIL movie???? My answer.... because my wife wanted to see it after reading the book.

After watching the movie, I did not understand all the hype of "don't go see that movie..." It was no different than all the other movies that have come out that follow after the novels.

My second answer to why I went to see the EVIL movie......

I don't go to movies to learn and shape my theology just like I don't go to learn my American History. National Treasure did not influence my beliefs about American History and the Golden Compass did not affect my biblical doctrine.

Both these movies were rated PG-13 and did not contain any bad language or nudity. Again, in my opinion, National Treasure is a good family movie in the genre of Indiana Jones movies and the Golden Compass was again boring to me. However, I am sure if you like movies like Harry Potter, Narnia and Lord Of The Rings....you will like this too.

There you go....my movie musings. Tomorrow is back to normal!
